How to Add Volume to Hair

It’s 2023. We’re embracing thick, healthy hair. That means we’re taking our supplements, eating healthy, and protecting our hair from damage. But what if you’re doing all the things, and your hair still looks a little… limp? If you want to be everyone’s hair icon, here’s how you’re going to achieve it.

Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are my number one tip for achieving the look of thick, voluminous hair instantly. Whether you chopped your hair like Hailey Bieber and can’t wait to grow it out or you have a special event coming up, hair extensions will give you dramatic results that will leave everyone with hair envy. Extensions can add length, volume, and dimension to your natural hair without the wait time.

You don’t need a special event in order to get them. Hand-tied hair extensions can be a big commitment which is why Studio One Salon requires consultations before all hair extension appointments. We want to make sure that your hair is healthy, that we can achieve the look you want, and that you’re willing to commit to the maintenance required for extensions so they last as long as possible.

We want you to have the best hair extension experience which includes having access to the best products. At Studio One Salon, we use Bellami hair extensions. Bellami is the most recognized hair extension brand in the world, has the highest quality control, and offers over 50 shades of hair so we can match your perfect color. The Bellami volume weft is amazing for adding volume no matter what hair type or color you have.

Haircut

Your haircut can make a huge difference between having flat or full hair. The right haircut on thin hair can encourage your flat hair to have bouncy movement. On thick hair, it’ll prevent your hair from looking bottom-heavy.

For thin hair, a bob or lob helps add volume to the hair around your face, creating the illusion of fuller hair. It’s easy to make mid-length and short hairstyles look thick and voluminous. Face framing, bangs, or light layers can add movement and dimension without taking away the thickness of your hair. With mid-length hair, it’s easy to add a wave without adding an hour to your morning routine. With the right products, your hair will last all day without falling out.

For thick hair, try a face frame to keep your hair feeling light and bouncy around the face. This will bring attention to your eyes. Adding long, rounded layers will give you body like no one’s business. A fresh cut can also help get rid of split ends and keep your hair looking frizz-free.

After your new haircut, you’ll want to be sure to take care of your hair health so it stays shiny, bouncy, and voluminous for as long as possible.

Shampoo & Conditioner

You already have to use shampoo and conditioner, so why not make them do the most for you?

Authentic Beauty Concept Amplify

Authentic Beauty Concept’s Amplify line includes a shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated to improve body and volume for fine hair. The gel conditioner is a game changer. It keeps the hair soft and moisturized without weighing it down or leaving you with that awful greasy feeling. It’s perfect for lightweight, bouncy hair.

Authentic Beauty Concept Deep Cleansing Shampoo

For thick hair that feels weighed down, try a clarifying shampoo to remove impurities, greasiness, and product buildup. The key ingredients are like a bouquet for your hair. It includes a combination of white peony, rose, freesia, and violet mixed with creamy musk and soft woods. This is the most luxurious shampoo to use during a weekend “Everything Shower.”

Texturizer

With a texturizer, I’m looking for a product that lasts without feeling weighed down or crunchy. I need a lightweight formula with a little bit of grit to give me the pieceyness I’m after. A texturizer is my go-to for adding volume to short haircuts without looking like Lord Farquaad. And it’s amazing for adding dimension and movement to long hair, too. It adds lift and keeps your hair looking effortlessly cool and lived-in.

O&M W Spray

The O&M W Spray is a dry wax in a hairspray formula. It adds separation and buildable texture for tousled looks. I would use this product on dry hair between wash days to accentuate my natural texture and add longevity to second-day hair. It’s also the best product to use if you plan on doing an updo. It makes your hair easier to work with and adds a little extra volume so your hair doesn’t look flat.

O&M Surf Bomb

Surf Bomb was created by Australians to get that super cool island girl hair when you don’t have the ocean available to you. Actually, it’s so good to keep in your beach bag and add a little extra texture to your hair for a low-maintenance style. Surf Bomb uses Australian Salt to give you effortless, sexy tousled hair while Cucumber Extract and Vitamin C protect your hair from drying out. Spray on damp hair and get excited about the mermaid volume when it dries.

Volumizer

Volumizer is different from texturizer. A texturizer is like carrying bedhead in a bottle for that “I woke up like this” look. Volumizer a little more polished. It is the styling product that gets you the bouncy, lightweight lift you need for the perfect blowout. Hair volume products are formulated to add even more volume than a texturizer does and keep your hair looking silky smooth.

O&M Atonic Thickening Spritz & Rootalicious

This is the perfect spritz for making your hair look thick and voluminous while also taking care of your hair health— exactly what O&M is known for. Use the Atonic Thickening Spritz before a blowout for bigger-than-ever hair. It’s formulated with O&M’s signature Native Australian Rainforest Extracts which are full of vitamins and antioxidants that protect hair from oxidation and sun damage. The product is also formulated with Rice Proteins that deeply infuse the hair shaft with Organic Coconut Oil to create thickness and body. Combine this with the O&M Rootalicious volumizing mousse for extra lift at the hair root.

Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer

If you remember Cindy Crawford’s hair in the 1992 Pepsi commercial— that is the kind of volume Color Wow gives you. This product is for when you want to bring out the big guns. The formula is innovative, light, and frothy. It’s long-lasting and provides weightless volume without alcohol, salt, or drying resins. And it’s got built-in heat protection. Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer is unrivaled. Apply 2-3 pumps to each section of your damp hair, blow dry with a round brush, and there you go. You have the most voluminous curls a girl could dream of.

Blow Dry

After you’ve prepped your damp hair with your styling products, the technique you use to dry your hair matters. First, you’ll need a good-quality hair dryer. Let us know in the comments if you need a recommendation.

Next, you’ll need a heat protector. The O&M Atonic Thickening Spritz and Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer both offer heat protection and volume all in one product. Start by turning your head upside down and blow-drying the roots of your hair to add the most volume to the crown of your head.

Next, you’ll do a rough dry from the root to tip, so it’s mostly dry. Now it’s time for the blowout. Section your hair into 1-inch pieces. Hair clips come in handy for this. Brush out a section of hair with a round brush and roll the hair while blow drying. Use the hot setting and a concentrator nozzle to get a good curl while smoothing the hair cuticle. Allow the hair to cool before removing the brush, and repeat with each section.

For even more volume, add a hair roller while the hair is hot, and secure it to your head. Repeat it with each section of hair, and wait for the hair to cool completely for about 15-30 minutes before removing the rollers.

Nutrafol

The final step in adding volume to your hair is taking a good quality hair supplement to promote new healthy hair growth. This is a great way to increase your hair volume naturally. Thin hair can be caused by so many factors— hormones, stress, lifestyle, metabolism, nutrition, and aging. Nutrafol supports your body in producing healthier, thicker hair with clinically proven results. There’s a reason everyone is talking about it. With 3-6 months of consistent use, people see noticeably thicker hair, less breakage, faster growth, and more volume.

Nutrafol is physician-formulated so that every ingredient is carefully selected to work at a biological level. However, it is not a pharmaceutical drug. Nutrafol was founded by people who experienced thinning hair and wanted a solution that was more rigorously tested than typical hair vitamins but was still an alternative to pharmaceuticals. You can even visit their website for a full breakdown of the ingredients including their Synergen Complex. This includes ingredients like ashwagandha, marine collagen peptides, curcumin, and saw palmetto. You can even see how individualized the ingredients are for each product they offer.
